The 2016 Big Drum Challenge was held August 29. The weather was a bit windy but otherwise beautiful. A total of 45 anglers from the three area fishing clubs participated. The Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club was represented by 21 anglers on six boats. Newcomers Charles Stoup and Ed Stanevicius brought their boats and acted as captains for FHFC. Ed caught a 43- inch drum the week before the event—his first. The anglers fished the Neuse River from Dawson Creek (near the Minnesott Beach/Havelock Ferry) to Paradise Shores in Pamlico County and South River. Eastern Salt Water Fishing Club anglers won all three awards—best club, largest fish, and most fish caught. The entire field of anglers enjoyed a lunch catered by Smithfield BBQ and post tournament camaraderie at Whittaker Pointe Marina.
